Known as “bliss balls” or “energy balls,” these small spheres of nourishing superfoods harken back to the hippie treat affectionately known as a “goo ball,” with varying recipes calling for a combination of nuts, dried fruit, shredded coconut and superfood supplements like maca, matcha or cacao. This version of the popular pantry snack traces its influence back further still, with a flavor profile influenced by one of the oldest known cannabis foods. A thousand-year-old recipe, mahjoun is a concoction traditionally eaten in the Middle East, a sort of heady jam that can be eaten on its own or dissolved into coffee.
At Jambo, we love to combine yoga, coffee and weed, letting the synergy of all of these things propel us through our busy lives. Consuming coffee and cannabis together is part of a rich historical tradition inherited from the infamous Club des Hashishians, a group of literary psychonauts who gathered in Paris in 1844. As described by Theophile Gautier, the Club des Hashischins would dissolve a “cannabis jam” (most likely mahjoun) into their coffee, allowing the caffeine and CBD to whisk them away into a flow state of word play, humor and wit. Now if only all of those French poets knew about yoga!
I’ve let both the traditional flavors of mahjoun and the hashischin’s jam inspire this humble energy ball, with a classic combination of dates, pistachios and orange blended with spices. You can dissolve this energy ball into your coffee or just eat it alongside as a boost for your productive day!
Coffee + Weed Paleo Energy Ball
Yields 12 - 14 small balls
1/4 cup almond butter
4 large pitted dates
1/4 pistachios, shelled
1 tbsp shelled hemp seeds
1 tsp orange zest, grated and chopped
1 tsp cacao powder
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp kief or crumbled hash (optional)
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp Jambo Daily Ritual ghee and MCT oil
1 - 2 sprays of Jambo Cinnamon Elixir
2 tbsp shelled hemp seeds (for coating the balls)
2 tbsp espresso powder (for coating the balls)
Using a food processor, blend the almond butter and dates together until they form a paste. Add each ingredient, pulsing the processor between additions. After all ingredients have been added, blend into an evenly moist paste, scraping the processor bowl with a rubber spatula if necessary.
Use a teaspoon to measure out equally-sized balls, and roll them in your hands. They should easily hold together.
Spread the espresso powder and hemp seeds in separate, shallow plates. Roll the balls in either coating for a fun snack.
